INEC fixes Sept 19 for Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency By-Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday 19th September, 2026 for the conduct of the bye-election into the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency.
This was contained in a press statement issued on Tuesday by Mohorret Bigun, Public Affairs Officer of the commission in Gombe.
The statement also revealed the timetable and schedule of activities before the conduct of the bye-election.
Jewel Post reports that the seat became vacant following the death of member representing the Constituncy, Yaya Bauchi Tongo, who died at the age of 62 in a hospital in Abuja after a rief illness on Friday June 12, 2026.
According to the statement dated August 17, on behalf of the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Alhaji Umar Mukhtar Gajiram, the bye-election will be conducted in accordance with Section 76 (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and other relevant provisions of the Electoral Act.
According to the timetable and schedule of activities, the Notice of Election will be published on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
The commission further stated that political parties intending to participate in the election are expected to conduct their primaries from August 21 to 25.
“The list of nominated candidates will be published on September 8, while campaign will commence on September 9, and end on September 17.
“The Commission therefore, called on all political parties to strictly adhere to the timetable and schedule of activities and conduct their activities in accordance with the provisions of the law.
“The Commission further assures all stakeholders across the 903 Polling Units, 31 Registration Areas and 3 Local Government Areas that it remains committed to providing a level playing field for all political parties and candidates and to conducting a free, fair, and inclusive bye-election,” part of the statement read.
The commission further urged eligible voters in the constituency to participate actively in the electoral process and support INEC by exercising their civic responsibility peacefully and responsibly.
