Diphtheria: Epidemiologist urges vigilance and prompt medical care in Gombe
By Laraba Usman
The Gombe State Epidemiologist, Dr. Nuhu Bile, has voiced concerns over reported cases of diphtheria among children in the state and is urging parents to remain vigilant.
Dr. Bile made told the Jewel Post in Gombe that children must receive timely medical attention, revealing that diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that typically affects the mucous membranes of the nose and throat.
He said diphtheria was treatable with medication, but that the disease could, in advanced stages, damage the heart, kidneys and nervous system and could be fatal, particularly in children.
The epidemiologist noted that recent cases recorded in the state involved children aged between four and 15 years.
“We have seen an upsurge in diphtheria cases among children aged four to 15; this may be linked to gaps in immunisation coverage, which could have left some children vulnerable to the disease,” De. Bile said.
He advised parents to take any child who developed a fever and difficulty swallowing to the nearest healthcare facility for proper assessment and treatment.
The Gombe State Epidemiologist observed that most children under the age of one had not been affected by the recent cases, but stressed the need for continued vigilance and adherence to routine immunisation schedules.
According to him, all secondary healthcare facilities across Gombe State were providing free treatment for diphtheria, making it essential that parents seek medical care as soon as symptoms appear.
Dr. Bile explained that early presentation was key to managing suspected cases and preventing the spread of the disease within communities.
He urged parents to ensure children receive routine vaccinations before the age of one, stressing that immunisation was critical to preventing vaccine-preventable diseases such as diphtheria.
According to him, the state government has stepped up community engagement to raise awareness about diphtheria, its symptoms, and the importance of seeking early treatment.
