Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has inaugurated a high-powered committee to investigate issues surrounding salary payments and the implementation of the new minimum wage for primary school teachers across the state.

Speaking during the inauguration at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi on Monday, Governor Idris reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring justice and fairness for teachers.

In a press statement issued by his chief press secretary, Ahmed Idris, the governor urged members of the committee to carry out their assignment with diligence, professionalism, and integrity, warning that his administration would not tolerate any form of compromise.

“I have a personal interest in this committee. I know how much the teachers were earning before, and I also know how much I approved as their new minimum wage.

“I trust the committee members. That is why I carefully selected credible individuals who will do the job thoroughly and professionally,” he added.

Governor Idris explained that the committee was constituted following discussions with the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and resolutions reached during a recent town hall meeting.

“Following our meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers and the outcome of the town hall meeting, I hereby inaugurate this committee to identify the actual grievances of primary school teachers regarding salary payments,” he stated.

According to the governor, the committee is expected to determine the actual monthly funding provided by local governments to Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs), particularly before and after the implementation of the new minimum wage.

The panel will also investigate any irregularities that may have affected the integrity of funds released for salary payments, identify individuals responsible for salary placement issues, distinguish between professional and non-professional teachers, and recommend measures to address any anomalies discovered during the investigation.

The committee has been given one month to submit its report to the state government.

Jewel Post reports that the committee is chaired by Prof. Malami Shehu Gulumbe and includes the Commissioner for Finance, Abubakar Muhammad, representatives of the Ministry for Local Government, the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), and the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, which will serve as secretary to the committee.
