Borno First Lady Flags Off 2026 MNCH Week

The First Lady Borno State, Falmata Babagana Umara Zulum, has flagged off the 2026 Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Week, Round One, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes for women and children.

The First Lady was represented at the flag-off ceremony held at the Dala Primary Health Care Centre in Jere Local Government Area of the state, by state’s the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Zuwaira Gambo.

She reiterated the Borno State Government’s commitment to improving maternal and child health through sustained investments in primary healthcare, increased public awareness, and expanded access to essential health services across communities.

Earlier, the Executive Secretary of the Borno State Primary Health Care Development Board (BoSPHCDB), Prof. Arab Alhaji, welcomed participants and stakeholders, describing the MNCH Week as a vital platform for delivering life-saving health services to women and children throughout the state.

Partners, including UNICEF, WHO, WFP, and other stakeholders, also commended the collaboration between the government and its partners in advancing maternal and child health interventions across the state.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Prof. Baba Mallam Gana, reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to providing accessible, equitable, and quality healthcare services for all residents, particularly women and children.

As part of the ceremony, the First Lady presented gifts to women beneficiaries in support of maternal and child health initiatives.

Jewel Post reports that the MNCH Week was organised by the BoSPHCDB, in collaboration with the Borno State Ministry of Health and Human Services, jointly organized the programme.

The Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week aims to deliver integrated, high-impact healthcare interventions at the community level.

The initiative focuses on strengthening routine immunisation, improving maternal and child nutrition, providing antenatal and postnatal care services, and promoting the early detection and prevention of common maternal and childhood illnesses.

The programme seeks to significantly reduce preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths across the state.
