Cape Verde’s veteran goalkeeper, Vozinha, delivered one of the standout performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, earning the Superior Player of the Match award after helping his side secure a historic goalless draw against Spain.
The 40-year-old shot-stopper produced a remarkable display between the posts as Cape Verde claimed its first-ever point at the FIFA World Cup in the nation’s tournament debut.
Facing constant pressure from the Spanish attack, Vozinha stood tall throughout the Group H encounter, frustrating the former world champions with a series of crucial saves. Spain fired 27 shots during the match, but the experienced goalkeeper repeatedly denied their attempts to find the breakthrough.
According to match statistics, Vozinha made seven saves, including six from inside the penalty area and one from outside the box. He also demonstrated composure under pressure by catching three crosses and completing 29 of his 42 passes.
The performance saw the Cape Verde captain write his name into the history books. At 40 years old, Vozinha became the oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on his FIFA World Cup debut.
His heroics proved decisive as the Blue Sharks produced one of the tournament’s early surprises, holding one of football’s traditional powerhouses to a scoreless draw. Spain dominated possession and created numerous chances but found no way past the inspired goalkeeper.
The result marks a significant milestone for Cape Verde, which is making its first appearance on football’s biggest stage. The point earned against Spain strengthens the African nation’s hopes of progressing from a challenging group that also includes Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.
For many observers, Vozinha’s display was not only the difference between victory and defeat but also one of the finest individual performances seen so far at the tournament.
As Cape Verde celebrates a memorable World Cup debut, the veteran goalkeeper has emerged as an early symbol of the team’s resilience, determination and belief on the global stage.
